Every week I learn something and/or many new things hosting this show. This week it was about how we are going to meet the ASHRAE goal of zero net energy use in new buildings by 2030. First I had the date wrong but that is not a big deal. I asked Robert Bean and ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer how are we going to meet this goal? I figured solar energy would be part of the answer but to my surprise he stated the most important gains we will make will come from doing a better job designing and constructing building envelopes. So those of you that are like me thinking the energy issue will be solved by bigger better renewable energy HVAC systems need to change our way of thinking. Lets help get people to understand we need to build energy efficient buildings first then heating and cooling them will not be such a big deal.
My next eye opener came when Professor Tang Lee added that even when we make new buildings “net zero” we will still be using way to much energy to heat the old inefficient buildings already in existence.  That is where we will really need to be creative and put our money where our mouth is to help solve our dependence on foreign oil and stop taking this planet of our down the drain.
